Thomas Cantrell Dugdale was an antiquarian topographic and cartographic publisher. His nine volume work Curiosities of England and Wales, first published in 1835, included 111 plates & 58 maps worked on by his civil engineer William Burnett. The publication was reissued in 11 volumes as England Delineated in 1846 with 283 plates.
This framed antique print is an original steel line engraving with later hand colouring. Although the artist and engraver are unknown, much of the work was based on drawings by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and engravers include John Greig, H Wallis, T & H W Bond and Luke Clennell.
The print shows view looking east across the town of Ashburton in Devon with the church of St Andrews in the foreground, and its 92ft tower and Chapel of St Lawrence behind. To the left of the print is East Street with its fine row of Georgian buildings. Ashburton was one of only four stannary towns in Devon, which became prosperous through the mining and selling of tin.
The print is in a good clean condition with later hand colouring. It is available mounted in an ivory conservation quality mount and with a gold wooden frame. Price – £30.00.
